Charles was born about 1841 in Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire.  Charles' father was Andrew Fraser and his mother was Martha Cooper.  His paternal grandparents are James Fraser and Jean Lorimer; his maternal grandparents are William Cooper and Martha Fraser.  He had three brothers and five sisters, named James, William, Andrew, Martha, Anne, Margaret, Leslie and Elizabeth.  He was the seventh oldest of the nine children.
