Christen was born in 1919.  Christen's father was Earnest Augustus Duke of Cumberland and his mother was Victoria Louise of Prussia.  His paternal grandparents were Earnest Duke of Cumberland and Thyra. He had three brothers and a sister, named Earnest Augustus, George William, Henry and Frederica.  He was the fourth oldest of the five children.
