José Gregorio was born on March 11th, 1802 in San Juan; Argentina.  His godfather was Antonio Benegas and his godmother was Angela Benegas.  José Gregorio's father was José María Yarza (Reteguy) and his mother was Juana Isabel Benegas.  His maternal grandparents are Antonio Benegas and <Unknown>. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named José Carlos, José Miguel, Florentino, Petronila, Pepa, Antonina de la Ascención, María del Carmen, Andrea, Juana Antonia del Carmen and Paulita de la Trinidad.  He was the second oldest of the eleven children.
