His paternal grandparents were Samuel Rankin and Azubah Whitcomb; his maternal grandfather was George Miller. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Leonard, Orson, William Henry, Azaba, Harriet E. and Rose Emma. He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
