His paternal grandparents were Samuel Rankin Jr and Rachel Sutherland; his maternal grandparents were John Q. Johnson and Margaret Sutherland. He had three brothers named Clark Lavern, John Peter and George. He was the second youngest of the four children. He died at the age of 73 on October 29th, 1958 in Vancouver, Clark, Washington, United States. He was buried in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon, United States.2 2 Death Notes
