His paternal grandparents were James Rankin and Margaret Witherspoon. He had five brothers and six sisters, named David, John, Edwin, Henry, Horatio Henry, Marion, Abigail, Lois, Maria, Laura H. and Sarah. He was the sixth oldest of the twelve children.
