Lois was born on May 5th, 1798 in Barnet, Caledonia, Vermont, United States.1 Lois' father was John Rankin and her mother was Lois Whitcher. Her paternal grandparents were James Rankin and Margaret Witherspoon. She had six brothers and five sisters, named David, John, Asa, Edwin, Henry, Horatio Henry, Marion, Abigail, Maria, Laura H. and Sarah. She was the fourth oldest of the twelve children.
