De Witt was born about 1853 in Michigan.1 De Witt's father was John Q. Johnson and his mother was Margaret Sutherland. His maternal grandparents were Eli Sutherland and Thankful Russell. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named Warren James, De Witt, Jared R., Mary Adelaide, Lousia Ann, Welcome, Harty Jane, Lucy Thankful, Elna E. and Minnie E.. He was the sixth oldest of the eleven children.-
