Lavina was born on December 7th, 1898 in Fremont Township Isabelle Conuty Michigan.¹ Lavina's father was John Butler Gordon and her mother was Ola (Ollie) Antoinette Little. Her paternal grandparents were Syrenus Gordon and Lousia Ann Johnson. She had three brothers and a sister, named Ralph, Harry, Rolland and Elise. She was the third oldest of the five children. She had a half-sister named Grace.
