Edmund Lewis

Edmund was born on February 11th, 1772 in Marblehead, Essex, Massachusetts.¹ Edmund's father was Edmund Lewis and his mother was Tabitha Rhoades Lewis. His paternal grandfather was Edmond Lewis; his maternal grandfather was John Russell and his maternal grandmother is Miriam Oliver Roads. He had four brothers and nine sisters, named John, John, William Russell, *Child, Elizabeth, Miriam, Miriam Russell, Tabitha Russell, Polly, Hannah, Charlotte, Rebecca and Mary Caroline. He died at the age of 48 on December 2nd, 1820 in New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana.²

  'Obituary: 'Died at New Orleans October 28, 1820 Capt. Edmund Lewis Jr. aged 48 of Marblehead, Mass. leaving a disconsolate widow and nine children to lament the loss of an affectionate husband and a kind and tender father. Capt. Lewis was universally esteemed and beloved by all who knew him in his domestic or in foreign climes; having a heart susceptible to the feelings and distresses of others. He bore with patience and resignation the allotments of Providence in causing him to pass through a scene of disappointments and deprivations in this vale, and we humbly hope through the grace of God is now enjoying the rest which remaineth for the just. Mark the perfect man and behold the upright for the end of that man is peace.' 'He was captured on board of his own ship the Tomahawk after peace was declared, and taken with eight others to Halifax where they [were] confined in prison. They escaped through a drain, took refuge under a dory while the English fired over them not knowing they were near. A pet dog was confined in prison with them, which they were obliged to kill lest he should betray them by barking. Capt. Lewis said 'he never did anything that went against his heart as that did.' 'From his daughter Charlotte Simpson.'
