  • "He lived in a gable roofed house now standing corner of Washington and South Street at the west corner of common. He bequeathed the house after the death of his (first?) wife to his daughter Tabitha Lewis but the (second?) wife outlived Tabitha 3 years. Will recorded in Salem 1807. Captain John was Lieut. and Ensign in Co. 10 of 2nd Mass. Reg't in Lewisberg expedition, 1745. His commission dated February 8, 1745. November 1774 was on Committee of Inspection to prohibit importation of British goods. Account of his service is found in Mass. History published in New England Genealogical Magazine and Essex Institute. Capt. Russell was too old for field service but sent several of his sons in his stead. He left at his death in chests under his bed:
