James was born about 1851 in Chatham Kent.  James' father was Charles Piper (Blacksmith b Maidstone Kent) and his mother was Mary Ann Savin (b Ramsgate Kent).  His paternal grandparents were Charles Piper (Blacksmith b Maidstone Kent) and Hannah Colvin; his maternal grandparents are Thomas Savin and <Unknown>. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Charles, William, Mary, Sarah and Hannah.  He was the second youngest of the six children.

James and Jane were married in a religious ceremony about March 1875 in Medway.1   They had six sons and five daughters, named Charles, James, Edmund, Albert, Leonard, Arthur, Eleanor, Edith, Rose, Daisy and Ada.  Arthur and Ada were twins.
