Thomas was born in 1840.  Thomas' father was Hugh Anderson (Virgin) Virden and his mother was Elizabeth Benefield.  His paternal grandparents were William Virgin and Sophia Unknown; his maternal grandparents were Willis Benefield and Milley Forrest. He had five brothers and two sisters, named John, Hence, Hugh, Felix, James, Lousia and Matilda.  He was the third youngest of the eight children.
