Mary was born in 1877 in Manchester, Lancashire, England.  Mary's father was Joseph MASSEY and her mother was Ellen MARSLAND.  Her maternal grandparents were John MARSLAND and Nancy WALKER.  She had five brothers and four sisters, named John, Stephen, Ed, Thomas, Isaac, Elizabeth, Nancy, Sarah and Caroline.  She was the nineth oldest of the ten children.
