William was born on August 5th, 1776 in Stone, Staffordshire, England.  William's father was John BOX and his mother was Fanny JOHNSTON.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas BOX and Ann SWINDALL.  He had two brothers and a sister, named Joseph, Thomas and Mary.  He was the oldest of the four children.
