Dempsey was born in 1851.  Dempsey's father was Frederick W. RIVERS and his mother was Cyntha M. KNIGHT?.  His paternal grandparents were William RIVERS and Betsy RIVERS.  He had seven brothers and four sisters, named James Frederick, Peter W., William M., John B., Marcus M. C., D. A., Richard M., Margaret, Elizabeth T., Hulda A. and Cyntha Jane.  He was the fourth oldest of the twelve children.
