John was born in 1877.  John's father was William Ezekiel BARNETT and his mother was Virginia HOWARD.  His paternal grandparents were Irvine Yancy BARNETT and Mary Ann TROBAUGH.  He had four brothers and five sisters, named James Irvin, Thomas E., Henry Watterson, William Oscar, Mary Fanny, Lettie Lee, Ella, Rowena P. and Virginia Pearl.  He was the fourth oldest of the ten children.
