Robert's father was Richard Turner and his mother was Isabella Smith.  His paternal grandparents were John Turner and Janet Marshall. He had six brothers and two sisters, named John, Richard, Robert, Peter, George, William, Janet and Isabella.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 2 on January 31st, 1853 in Kirknewton.  He was buried in East Calder.^3 3
