Mary's father was John Turner and her mother was Elisabeth Manuel.  Her paternal grandparents were John Turner and Janet Marshall. She had six brothers and a sister, named John, James, Peter, Richard, William, Robert and Janet.  She was the fourth youngest of the eight children. She had a half-sister named Mary.  She died at the age of 18 in 1869 in Ratho.
