Mary was born in 1851 in Whitburn and her baptism took place there on February 8th, 1851.1  Mary's father was John Turner and her mother was Elisabeth Manuel.  Her paternal grandparents were John Turner and Janet Marshall. She had six brothers and a sister, named John, James, Peter, Richard, William, Robert and Mary.  She was the fourth youngest of the eight children. She had a half-sister named Mary.
