John's father was John Turner and his mother was Elisabeth Manuel.  His paternal grandparents were John Turner and Janet Marshall. He had five brothers and two sisters, named James, Peter, Richard, William, Robert, Janet and Mary.  He was the oldest of the eight children. He had a half-sister named Mary.
