Allison's father was Andrew Thomson and her mother was Helen Cunningham. Her paternal grandparents were Archibald Thomson and Alison Smeal; her maternal grandparents were James Cunningham and Elisabeth Walker. She had five brothers named Archibald, James, John, Thomas and Alexander. She was the third oldest of the six children.
