Joseph's father was Joseph Taylor and his mother was Margaret Orr. His paternal grandparents were Andrew Taylor and Ann Scoffield. He had eight brothers and three sisters, named Andrew, Thomas, Andrew, James, William, David, Samuel, Samuel, Agnes, Annie and Margaret. He was the third oldest of the twelve children. He died at the age of 64 in 1919 in Galston.
