John was born in 1726 in Kilsyth. John's father was Robert Shaw and his mother was Christian Kirkwood.  His paternal grandparents were William Shaw and Jean Cleland; his maternal grandparents were John Kirkwood and Isabel Hendrie. He had seven brothers and a sister, named William, Robert, David, Alexander, James, Joseph, Thomas and Christian.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
