Thomas was born in March 1748 in Kilsyth and his baptism took place there on April 3rd, 1748. Thomas' father was Robert Shaw and his mother was Christian Kirkwood.  His paternal grandparents were William Shaw and Jean Cleland; his maternal grandparents were John Kirkwood and Isabel Hendrie. He had seven brothers and a sister, named John, William, Robert, David, Alexander, James, Joseph and Christian.  He was the youngest of the nine children.
