Christian was born in July 1736 in Kilsyth and her baptism took place there on July 18th, 1736. Christian's father was Robert Shaw and her mother was Christian Kirkwood.  Her paternal grandparents were William Shaw and Jean Cleland; her maternal grandparents were John Kirkwood and Isabel Hendrie. She had eight brothers named John, William, Robert, David, Alexander, James, Joseph and Thomas.  She was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
