Mary was born on January 2nd, 1792 in Paisley and her baptism took place on January 15th, 1792 at Paisley Abbey. Mary's father was John Mathie and her mother was Mary Brown. She had six brothers and two sisters, named Alexander, Alexander, William, James, James, Robert, Margaret and Annie.  She was the youngest of the nine children.
