Bessie's father was David Leithhead and her mother was Christina McGregor Robertson. Her maternal grandparents were Thomas John Robertson and Catherine Cameron. She had a brother and nine sisters, named Thomas, Mary, Christina, Margaret, Jessie, Annie, Davidina, Agnes, Jeanie and Harriet. She was the second oldest of the eleven children. She died at the age of 68 in 1937 in Glasgow.
