Jean was born in August 1850 in Monkton.1  Jean's father was <Unknown> and her mother was Janet Shaw.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Shaw and Jean Scoffield. She had a brother, and also a sibling of unknown gender named William and Shaw.  She was the second oldest of the three children. She had three half-brothers and three half-sisters, and also two half-siblings of unknown gender, named James, James, Thomas, Janet, Margaret, Mary, <Unknown> and <Unknown>.
