Robert's father was Hall Hamilton and his mother was Janet McKellar.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Hamilton and Janet McLatchie. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Hugh, Hall, John, Janet, Cathrine and Jane.  He was the youngest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 51 on July 27th, 1909.
