James' father was William Galt and his mother was Margaret Towers. His maternal grandparents were William Tours and Margaret Colquhoun. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, William, John, James, Margaret, Kate, Cecillia and Tina. He was the second youngest of the nine children. He died at the age of 75 on December 24th, 1945 in Paisley.³
