Alexander's father was James Brown and his mother was Marion Gibb. His maternal grandparents were George Gibb and Helen Cunningham. He had four brothers and five sisters, named William, George, James, Archibald, Helen, Elizabeth, Janet, Jessie and Marion. He was the second youngest of the ten children.
