George's father was James Brown and his mother was Marion Gibb. His maternal grandparents were George Gibb and Helen Cunningham. He had three brothers and five sisters, named William, James, Archibald, Helen, Elizabeth, Janet, Jessie and Marion. He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
