Elizabeth was born in 1828 in Leith.1  Elizabeth's father was David Brash and her mother was Agnes Henderson.  Her paternal grandparents were David Brash and Margaret Easton. She had a brother and five sisters, named Alexander, Jane, Agnes, Margaret, Robina and Magdalene.  She was the third youngest of the seven children.
