John's father was David Brash and his mother was Agnes Henderson.  His paternal grandparents were David Brash and Margaret Easton; his maternal grandparents were John Henderson and Jean Spears. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named David, David, Alexander, Jean, Agnes, Agnes, Margaret, Robina, Elizabeth and Magdalene.  He was the fourth oldest of the eleven children.  He died before 1881.¹
