John was born on August 18th, 1767 in Muiravonside. John's father was Thomas Aitken and his mother was Margaret Addie.  His paternal grandparents were James Aitken and Margaret Crauford; his maternal grandparents were John Addie and Janet Reid. He had two brothers and seven sisters, named James, John, Janet, Margaret, Mary, Christian, Helen, Elizabeth and Jean.
