Janet was born on January 16th, 1753 in Muiravonside. Janet's father was Thomas Aitken and her mother was Margaret Addie.  Her paternal grandparents were James Aitken and Margaret Crauford; her maternal grandparents were John Addie and Janet Reid. She had three brothers and six sisters, named James, John, John, Margaret, Mary, Christian, Helen, Elizabeth and Jean.
