John was born on May 11th, 1737 in Kirkliston.  John's father was Thomas Aitkine and his mother was Agnes Bishop.  His paternal grandparents were John Aikman and Agnes Bapty; his maternal grandfather was John Bishop. He had five brothers and three sisters, named John, Thomas, Archibald, James, Robert, Janet, Hellen and Elice.  He was the youngest of the nine children.
