Elice was born on June 24th, 1730 in Kirkliston.  Elice's father was Thomas Aitkine and her mother was Agnes Bishop.  Her paternal grandparents were John Aikman and Agnes Bapty; her maternal grandfather was John Bishop. She had six brothers and two sisters, named John, Thomas, Archibald, James, Robert, John, Janet and Hellen.  She was the eighth oldest of the nine children.
