Robert was born on April 2nd, 1728 in Kirkliston.  Robert's father was Thomas Aitkine and his mother was Agnes Bishop.  His paternal grandparents were John Aikman and Agnes Bapty; his maternal grandfather was John Bishop. He had five brothers and three sisters, named John, Thomas, Archibald, James, John, Janet, Hellen and Elice.  He was the seventh oldest of the nine children.
