David's father was David Hay-Bruce and his mother was Agnes Glen.  His paternal grandparents were David Hay-Bruce and Helen Bruce. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Alexander, William, Thomas, Robert, Bruce, Agnes, Elisabeth and Margaret. He had a half-brother named James.  He died at the age of 21 in 1762.
