Richard was born in 1859 in Beckingham, Lincolnshire.1   Richard's father was Patterson Elson and his mother was Catherine. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, William, John, George, Joseph, Jane, Elizabeth and Eliza.  He was the second youngest of the nine children.
