Jane was born in 1841 in Beckingham, Lincolnshire.1   Jane's father was Patterson Elson and her mother was Catherine. She had six brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, William, John, George, Richard, Joseph, Elizabeth and Eliza.  She was the oldest of the nine children.
