Robert, known as The Bruce, was born on July 11th, 1274 in Writtle, Near Chelmsford, Essex, England.1   The Bruce's father was 3rd Earl of Carrick Robert de Brus Lord of Annandale and his mother was Countess Margaret of Carrick.  His paternal grandparents were Lord of Annandale Robert (The Competitor) de Brus and Isabel of Gloucester De Clare; his maternal grandparents were Earl Neal of Carrick and Margaret Stewart. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Edward, Nigel, Thomas, Alexander, Isabella, Christina, Maud, Mary, Margaret, Elizabeth and Margery.  He was the third oldest of the twelve children.  He died at the age of 54 on June 7th, 1329 in Cardross, Dunbartonshire, Scotland.2
