William, known as White Hands, was born in 1135 in Blois, Loir-et-Cher, Centre, France.1   White Hands' father was Count of Blois and Champagne Theobald (The Great) of Blois III and his mother was Maud de Carinthia.  His paternal grandparents were Count Stephen (The Sage) Henry of Blois II and Adelidis (Alice) of England; his maternal grandparents were Duke of Carinthia Engelbert von Sponheim II and Uta von Passau. He had three brothers and six sisters, named The Liberal, Theobald, Stephen, Isabelle, Marie, Agnes, Adele, Mathilde and Margaret.  He was the fifth youngest of the ten children.
