Theobald was born in 1126 in Blois, Loir-et-Cher, Centre, France.1  Theobald's father was Count of Blois and Champagne Theobald (The Great) of Blois III and his mother was Maud de Carinthia.  His paternal grandparents were Count Stephen (The Sage) Henry of Blois II and Adelidis (Alice) of England; his maternal grandparents were Duke of Carinthia Engelbert von Sponheim II and Uta von Passau. He had three brothers and six sisters, named The Liberal, Stephen, White Hands, Isabelle, Marie, Agnes, Adele, Mathilde and Margaret.  He was the third oldest of the ten children.
