William's father was Charles Elliott Goad and his mother was Harriet Reilly. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Thomas Goad and Maria Jane Boileau. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Charles, Frederick, Joseph, Ada, Clara and Harriet. He was the second oldest of the seven children.
