Clara's father was Charles Elliott Goad and her mother was Harriet Reilly. Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Thomas Goad and Maria Jane Boileau. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Charles, William, Frederick, Joseph, Ada and Harriet. She was the sixth oldest of the seven children.
