John was born in 1852.1   John's father was John Staniland and his mother was Eliza.  His paternal grandparents were Stephen Staniland and Jane Barley. He had four brothers and two sisters, named George, Stephen, John, Barley, Mary and Ann.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
