John was born in 1820 and his baptism took place on July 9th, 1820 in Selby, Yorks.1  John's father was Stephen Staniland and his mother was Jane Barley.  His paternal grandparents were John Staniland and Ann Pattrick; his maternal grandparents were John Barley and Ann Taylor. He had two sisters named Ann and Jane. He had three half-brothers and a half-sister, named George, Thomas, Thomas and Elizabeth.  He died at the age of 83 on November 15th, 1903.
