Bertha was born in 1889 in Masham.1  Bertha's father was Benjamin Shambrook and her mother was Elizabeth Bilson.  Her paternal grandparents were Daniel Shambrook and Maria Lane. She had two brothers and two sisters, named William, Walter, Margaret and Helena.  She was the second youngest of the five children.
